hello all --
i have an old G3 iMac with a DVD drive, 60 GB HD and 512MB ram running at 500Mhz. I have been trying to install OSX (10.3 or 10.4) on it without success. The machine either locks up during the install process or during the install set up screens. I can wipe the HD starting up from the Install disc and then install OS 9.2 without any trouble.
Here is some more info:
- firmware has been updated to 4.1.9 or whatever the most recent version is
- OS X install discs are purchased retail versions
- iMac passes all hardware tests, memory is OK, HD is fine
- i have wiped the HD and written zeroes to it several times
- install discs work on other machines
The only thing i have not yet done is replaced the internal battery, but i don't know why that would cause an OSX install to fail but not an OS 9.
Any help would be much appreciated. This is driving me crazy.

the RAM is factory installed
It came from Apple with 512 MB? or from a retailer?
...what would your next step be?
Disconnect/remove all 3rd party devices. Replace RAM with RAM known to be agreeable with OS X.

  • Hi,
I have a mid 2010 27 inch i5 machine and after I had installed OSX Lion last month the machine randomly shut itself down while I'm using it. At first I thought it was because of a software problem with Final Cut Pro X, since I installed that at the same time and it would shut down while I was using it. Then it start to shut down while I'm just browsing the net. Restarting is not a problem but a pain to loose unsafe data when it crashes.
Does anybody else have this problem? Again the machine was working fine before OSX Lion so I don't think it's a hardware issue. On average it would shutdown once or twice per usage day sometime a few minutes after turning on the machine, still cool, and sometime after a while, not excessively hot.
Appreciate any help and thank you in advance!

  • Hi
I have a 2007 iMac 4,1 Intel core duo 2ghz that refused to boot after crashing.
After much searching of support articles i have tried all suggestions.
It would not accept the original [tiger] install discs[superdrive spits them out] so i used my macbookpro to erase the hd and then install disc 1 via target mode.
The iMac now gets as far as select destination, in the installer, but the hard drive does not appear [waited more than 1 hour].
I have the leopard upgrade dvd also.
I ran disk utility verify and its says vol 1 iMac appears ok
    1 HFS volume checked
    volume passed verification
but verify disk permissions says first aid failed- no valid packages
Does anyone have any solutions that will solve this, as i am no expert on these matters and really need step by step help.
    Many thanks in advance
    P

    I am confused!
    You said.
    Please confirm:
You want to erase the drive on the iMac after booting from the Macbook Pro, with the iMac in TDM. Is that correct?
YES I did that so as to install osx install disk 1.
When you boot in TDM and run DU off the MBP hard drive, does it recognize the iMac hard drive?
YES i erased the iMac HD and installed osx disk 1.
Note that you cannot erase / reformat the drive from which the computer is booted.
    BUT u said this previously!
    Try this:
Repeat this first part, then reformat the drive on the iMac, using Disk Utility on the installer disk. Select Mac OS extended, GUID partition.
Then run the installer in the usual way.
    details are
    mount point : /
    format: mac os extended [journaled]
    owners enabled : yes
    folders : 5,563
    cap 465
    avail 46
    used 5.0 gb
    files 11,728
    write status : read write
    S.M.A.R.T status : verified
    verify: vol passed verification
permissions verify ; error no valid packages
    installer hangs at destination?
What about this? permissions verify ; error no valid packages

  • Hi,
I have an old iMac G3, it had a hdd problem and I then replaced it. Then I tried to install OSX on it using my MacBook Pro's install CDs(or dvd, I don't know) but of course they don't contain the proper drivers. So I installed 9.0 then update through until 9.2.2 and updates to the latest firmware. Then I bought a genuine copy of someone I know. Now to the problem:
When I insert the disc for OSX 10.4 and try to install it hangs at various points during installation, sometimes at 'Preparing Installation', or 'agree' on the licence agreement, or during the selection of the install location. Also, I tried to start the Disk Utility. But, then again, it hangs.
I noticed that(since you can hear it quite well, no it's not broken), you hear the disc spinning and just before it hangs it slows, and stops. like when opening the disk utility or advancing too far into the process.
    Please help...
P.s. Sorry for my English, I'm Dutch

Hi KoudeToaster, en een warm welkom op de forums!
What size is the Hard Drive now?
Not much you can do if you can't get to Disk Utility.
Did you make sure the Jumpers were set correc tly on the Drive?
Did you see if it needs a firmware update...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Also, much RAM that was good enough for OS9 was broken, (not good enough), for/by OSX, and 10.2 broke more, same with 10.3 & 10.4

  • Hi,
I got this iMac G3 with OS 9.1 installed on the hdd. I first updated the firmware and then swapped the hdd for an empty one (with was once used on a windows system)
I try to install OSX 10.4.7 (original grey cd's for iMac) on my iMac G3
Short after reading the cd I get the following screen: grey with a black window witch says: 'you need to restart your computer .Hold down the Powerbutton for several seconds or press the restart button' in several languages.
shown over this screen I see multiple lines with several panic and kernel messages.
the first line says: panic (cpu 0 caller 0x002E49D0): unable to find driver for this platform: 'Powermac2,1'.
I pressume that the last line mentions the problem witch causes the hanging?
    Last line says:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.3: Tue Aug 8 18:13:19 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.11.2obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
I strolled off the internet using this last message to find an answer for this 'panic' but no results.
Pressing d or c while starting up doesn't matter, I instantly get the screen as discribed.
I did reset-nvram and then reset-all, still the same screen shown.
And yes, I'm new to the 'appleworld', I've had it with windows, so hopefully i'm only making newbie errors
Anybody here who can help me out?
PS: i made a picture of the screen, but don't know how to upload it here (might not be possible anyway)

    HI Eppie (gek hoor)
I upgrade a lot of G3 from OS9 to Tiger. As we speak/type I'm doing a G3 500 MHz. I created a Tiger clone on a Hard disk so I can do the upgrade also on G3s without a DVD player.
The process USED to work smooth until a few minutes ago:
-- I upgraded my clone to 10.4.11 first: the clone disk was connected to a already long ago upgraded G3: went well
-- I upgraded the OS9 G3 on the firmware level
-- Tried to boot the G3 from the clone disk>>>BANG crash
-- Fortunately I had also a 10.4.4 clone on the same disk (other partition) and the target booted very well from that partition.
    Conclusion (until now)
iMac G3 with OS9 on the HDD and upgraded firmware won't leap to recent versions of tiger (I don't know where the break point is it's between 10.4.4 and 10.4.11
I'm right now transfering 10.4.4 and for the sake of the experiment I will look after the the target G3 is running 10.4.4. if I can boot from the external HDD partition with 10.4.11. If it works I'll transfer that one and having a clean 10.4.11 on a 7 old imac
    Hope this helps
    Henk

  • This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot. I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac. I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me. (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.) Any advice is welcome. Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.
    Thanks.

In addition to Mike's suggestions, you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.

  • Hi,
Having some trouble installing OSX Lion on my 5 year old iMac which has a broken display.
The display has been dead for a couple of years now and I've been using an external monitor without any problems. Today I decided to upgrade to Lion - I downloaded the installer from the App Store and started the install which rebooted the machine. After reboot I'm presented with a grey 'thatched' background image on the external display and nothing else, no menu bar, installation menu etc.
I presume the internal display is showing the menu I need but I can't see it as that screen is broken. Is there a way to turn on mirroring during the install process so I can use my external display? I've tried various shortcuts held down during startup - OPTION-F14, CMD-F1, CMD-F2 - but none have worked.
If this isn't possible, is there a way to abort the Lion install process and go back to using my Snow Leopard install? Whenever I boot the machine I am taken to the OS X Lion installer and don't know how to get back to my Snow Leopard install. I tried holding down OPTION key on startup to choose the list of available OS installs, but again, the internal display is being used so I can't see what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Genius idea, thank you. Was able to step through the install procedure using voiceover and the screenshots on this page http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Definitely a first for me, installing an OS with voice only

  • Hi,
I have a 24' iMac but the Screen is broken. It still worked with a external Display connected via MiniDVI but now i would like to install OSX 10.6. The problem is that I can't get the Installation to show on the external Display and I can't see what I'm (supposed to be) doing on the iMac's screen. With the DVD inserted it boots up like this (I can't even get the DVD out now):
Is there a working Shortcut (I tried cmd+F7 and cmd+F1) or other way to install without the main screen or is there at least a way to retrieve the DVD?

If you had another Mac you could do a remote install to the iMac 24'.

  • I'm not able to install windows 7 in my imac 21' which has the latest OSX 10.9
It keeps saying that I need a 64bit version of win7 which I actually have but it doesn't seems to be recognize.
    Can someone help me out?
    Thank you

To my knowledge there are no official MS Windows DVDs that contain both the 32 and 64 bit versions. There is a way to make a USB thumb drive that has both bit version on it but AFAIK this can't be done on a DVD disc even with a Dual Layer DVD disc.
For the Windows installer to function, actually boot the system to the install routine, certain files have to be on a certain area of the DVD disc. If by chance you really do have a DVD disc that contains both bit versions your Mac is only seeing the 32bit version on that disc.
You'll need to get a Real MS DVD of just the 64bit version or download the 64bit version ISO from My Digital Life and burn it to a DVD disc.

In fact i'm using a DVD with both 32 and 64-bit win7. But it's the only one I have. I don't want to install the newest Win 8.
So you're saying there is no solution for this?
Thank you so much for your response.

  • I installed OSX 10.6.8 on iMac and now I have two icons for time machine in my dock. When I try to access either one the wheel goes round and round. I seem to have lost all back ups that were on Time Capsule. Not sure how to check or what to do. Thanks.

See what happens if you select the TM icon in your menubar, and select Enter Time Machine there.
If that doesn't help, try the things in #E4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 3TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
    Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say 'Verified' then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the 'Star Wars' display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

  • Since installing OSX 10, my iMac randomly shuts down and restarts. I can not determine why this is happening. Any ideas?

    1. This is a comment on what you should and should not do to protect yourself from malicious software ('malware') that circulates on the Internet. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it 'XProtect.' The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
    3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated 'Gatekeeper' by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. 'Sandboxed' applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandboxing security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a 'Malware Removal Tool' (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called 'Trojan horses,' which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know what is safe?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” 'player,' 'extractor,' or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is unsafe.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the 'DNSChanger' malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or 'cracks' of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube 'downloaders' are outside the safe harbor, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe. For instance, if a web page warns you that Flash is out of date, do not follow an offered link to an update. Go to the Adobe website to download it, if you need it at all.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
'FREE WI-FI !!!' networks in public places are unsafe unless you can verify that the network is not a trap (which you probably can't.) Even then, do not download any software or transmit any private information while connected to such a network, regardless of where it seems to come from or go to.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation 'https' when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
    7. Never install any commercial 'anti-virus' or 'Internet security' products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free anti-virus products in the Mac App Store — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial 'anti-virus' products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. Most of the real danger comes from highly targeted 'zero-day' attacks that are not yet recognized.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    8. An anti-malware product from the App Store, such as 'ClamXav,' doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have 'phishing' links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An anti-virus app is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
Anti-virus software may be able to tell you which particular trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use the software unless an institutional policy requires it.
The ClamXav developer won't try to 'upsell' you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

  • Have just been given a turqouise(?) iMac which was running OS9 perfectly well.
Never having used anything other than OS X I decided to try installing that to the iMac using the OS X install discs that came with my MacBook. What a disaster! So far OS X is not installed - probably no surprise?
On boot-up I get the chimes, then the Mac hangs. The first and last lines of a fairly long message are:
    First Line:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E54BC): Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac2,1
    Last line:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.3 Wed Oct 18 22:00:38 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.15.4.obj~4/Release_PPC panic. We are hanging here . . .
And the OSX install disc won't eject. I've tried all the various combinations mentioned on other posts to get a stuck disc out - all to no avail.
Have I wrecked this iMac? Can I fix it - how? Can I get my install disc out without taking a hammer to the iMAc?
Any words of wisdom (and/or admonishment) gladly received.
    Regards,
    David
Black MacBook 2.1, iMac G4, Turqouise iMac G?? Mac OS X (10.4.9) Think I've killed the Turqouise iMac. Shame on me.

The usual remedy for ejecting a CD is to turn the computer off, then start up as usual while holding the mouse button down.
If that works, you should update the firmware on the iMac. This will help:

After that, try installing X in the usual way.
